Trocano Project REDD+ Supports Women’s Wellbeing with a Mother’s Day Outreach Event in Sao Jose do Miriti
A focus on community, health, and resilience with the women of Borba
On May 10th, 2025, the Go Balance Trocano Project visited the São José do Miriti community, a vibrant riverside village along the Borba-Mapiá road. The purpose was to host a social-environmental action in honour of Mother’s Day.
Organised in partnership with the Borba Municipal Hall and the Municipal Department of Health, the event brought care, celebration, and crucial women’s health support to families in the region.
A Celebration of Mother’s Day, Led with Purpose
Trocano Araretama Project consultant Mrs. Gilmara Menezes opened the event. She introduced the project’s core objectives and explaining the many community-based actions already underway. These include environmental education workshops and sustainable practices courses. The Trocano Project team also carried out school-based initiatives such as gardens and climate awareness events in nearby communities recently.
This Mother’s Day outreach is part of a broader series of Trocano Project REDD+ community action. Recently, in Divino Espírito Santo Community, students learned about soil health and climate change through interactive school sessions.

These efforts form part of the Go Balance Trocano project mission: protecting Amazonian forests by empowering the communities who depend on them.
Women’s Health Support in Borba, Amazonas
Following a moving blessing led by a local pastor’s wife, attendees enjoyed a breakfast prepared with care by the Trocano Project team — a small gesture to show appreciation for the mothers of São José do Miriti. This in celebration of the women who hold communities together every day.
Thanks to the partnership with the Municipal Department of Health, nurses Édson and Joana offered guidance on women’s health topics and carried out rapid health tests and screenings. They also offered preventative care advice for the women and mothers present. These services were delivered directly to the community — reinforcing that social welfare is inseparable from environmental stewardship.

Just as with the recent Trocano Project women’s health and wellbeing event in PAE Maripiti community, this celebration was made possible through active collaboration with local leaders and continued municipal support.
This integrated approach demonstrates how REDD+ can deliver meaningful co-benefits beyond carbon — especially when aligned with local government priorities and frontline needs.
Gifts, Games, and Gratitude for Mother’s Day
Following the health session, the programme continued with a lively bingo game and the distribution of gifts for the mothers in attendance. The warm spirit of the day was supported by multiple contributors of the Trocano Project team, including Mr. Gabriel Peiter, who assisted from planning to conclusion, Mr. Asafe Castilho, who documented the day’s events for the project’s reporting and media and Mrs. Fernanda Freitas, who led on coordination and delivery of the action.

The team also collected consent forms from participating families. This was to enable the respectful sharing of photos and videos to showcase the project’s impact.
Community Voices and Shared Appreciation
As the day drew to a close, the President of the community offered thanks on behalf of all participants. The community president and other residents expressed heartfelt thanks to the team. She was grateful for making the women of São José do Miriti feel seen, celebrated, and supported. The women described how moments like these strengthen family life and community wellbeing in rural Borba.

Their appreciation reflects the spirit of local cooperation that drives the Trocano Project REDD+ in Vila Izabel, and other communities along the Madeira River.
This celebration of motherhood wasn’t just a social gathering — it was a statement of intent. The Go Balance Trocano Project understands that empowered, respected women are central to long-term forest conservation. As Mrs. Gilmara reflected:
“Actions like these recognise the strength of women in our communities. When we support them, we strengthen the forest too.”
Social Wellbeing as a Pathway to Forest Protection
The Trocano Project REDD+ is grounded in a simple belief: that healthy, valued communities are the best guardians of nature. By promoting social inclusion, wellbeing, and recognition — especially among women — the project reinforces its long-term commitment to environmental sustainability.

This Mother’s Day event in São José do Miriti is part of a wider strategy to link climate action with community development, trust-building, and resilience.
