Local Volunteer Fire Brigade Established in Borba by the Trocano Araretama Project.
In 2024, the Trocano Araretama Project successfully trained 25 local community members to become volunteer firefighters in Borba, Amazonas. This ground-breaking initiative involved two intensive 4-day training courses held in August and October, marking the establishment of Borba’s first-ever volunteer fire brigade.
Comprehensive Firefighting Training for Local Volunteers
The courses combined theoretical lessons and hands-on practical exercises to equip volunteers with professional firefighting techniques. Participants learned essential skills such as:
- Fire prevention and suppression methods.
- Safe operation and maintenance of firefighting tools like backpack pumps and hoes.
- First aid and emergency response protocols.
- Strategies for managing controlled burns and preventing wildfires.
The training ensured that volunteers were prepared to handle forest fire emergencies and perform controlled burnings safely and effectively.
Structured and Practical Learning
The first training course was held in August 2024. This took place at the Distance Education Center (CED) in Borba, with logistical support from the Municipality of Borba. Experienced instructors, Adriano Araújo de Oliveira and Francisco Bandeira Almeida, led the sessions, combining technical knowledge with practical demonstrations.
Day 1 & 2: Classroom learning focused on fire management strategies, safety protocols, and the legal aspects of controlled burns.
Day 3 & 4: Practical exercises at Balneário do Lira allowed participants to apply their skills in simulated scenarios. Activities included physical fitness tests, tool handling assessments, and survival techniques.
Real-World Application and Testing
Participants underwent rigorous testing to ensure readiness, including carrying a 20-litre backpack pump and mastering the use of agricultural tools. Practical firefighting scenarios helped simulate real-world challenges, giving trainees valuable hands-on experience.
Key training highlights included:
- Execution of controlled burns under supervision.
- Use and maintenance of firefighting equipment during combat situations.
- Emergency rescue techniques and first aid.
- Recognizing Achievement and Commitment
The training culminated in a ceremony attended by local officials, including Mr. Alcimar, Pastor Cardoso, and the Secretaries of Environment and Civil Defense.
During the event, certificates of completion were awarded to the 15 participants who successfully passed all assessments. Each volunteer also received a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kit.
The dedication and commitment of the participants were celebrated, emphasizing their vital role in protecting Borba’s environment from forest fires.
A Partnership for Success
