Community Actions in Trocano REDD+ – February 2026

Latest developments from the Trocano Project in Borba, Amazonas, where Go Balance continues to strengthen local partnerships, expand education initiatives, and support community-led REDD+ progress in Brazil.

February 2026 was another active month for the Trocano Araretama Project in Borba, Amazonas, with continued progress across community engagement, environmental initiatives, and local partnerships. Developed by Go Balance in Brazil, the project continued to demonstrate how REDD+ project activities can create practical benefits for communities while supporting long-term forest conservation goals.

Building on the momentum of January, the month focused on strengthening relationships with public institutions, maintaining close dialogue with communities, and advancing initiatives linked to education and sustainable development.

Strengthening Support for Women and Families in Borba

February also highlighted the value of Go Balance support for wider community wellbeing in Borba through consultancy capacity connected to the Women’s Defenders Office. During the month, coordination took place with institutions focused on women, children, adolescents, justice, and public safety, alongside training initiatives and public awareness actions. These efforts help strengthen local support systems and reinforce the social foundations that underpin long-term community resilience.

This type of collaboration reflects the wider Go Balance Brazil REDD+ approach, where long-term conservation is supported through partnerships that also deliver local social and economic value.

Education as a Long-Term Opportunity

The English for Tourism Services course remained a major focus throughout February.  The initiative is designed to provide practical language skills that can help local residents engage more confidently with visitors and access new opportunities linked to tourism and customer service.  During the month, work continued on:

  • course validation processes
  • stakeholder engagement
  • participant awareness and recruitment
  • integration with local institutions

This reflects a broader principle within Go Balance REDD+ activities in Brazil: environmental conservation should be accompanied by pathways that strengthen local opportunity and resilience.

Environmental Education Reaches 220 Students in Borba

On 25 February, the Trocano Araretama Project delivered an Environmental Education lecture in recognition of World Environmental Education Day for students at Monsenhor Coutinho State School in Borba, Amazonas. Approximately 220 students took part across morning and afternoon sessions, with activities adapted to different age groups to maximise engagement and understanding.

The programme included educational videos, visual presentations, and accessible teaching materials designed to encourage awareness of environmental issues and responsible action. Students also participated in discussion groups that promoted dialogue and critical reflection, followed by an educational game that combined learning with participation and symbolic prizes for attendees.

Initiatives like this reflect how Go Balance continues to support practical REDD+ education in Brazil by connecting environmental awareness with younger generations through engaging, community-based learning experiences.

Community Outreach Through Local Radio

On 2 February 2026, the project team took part in an interview at Rádio Santo Antônio in Borba, Amazonas, helping share upcoming opportunities and activities with the wider community. During the programme, the team promoted the English for Tourism Services course, explaining its purpose and benefits for residents interested in developing practical skills linked to visitor support and local opportunity. The interview also provided an opportunity to discuss other initiatives planned for the year ahead under the Trocano Araretama Project, reinforcing transparency, public engagement, and continued community participation.

Supporting Environmental and Livelihood Initiatives

Alongside education and partnerships, February also included continued preparation and support for environmental and livelihood-focused activities.  This included ongoing development of initiatives linked to:

  • sustainable agriculture
  • environmental awareness
  • community training opportunities
  • practical support for local producers and institutions

While some of this work takes place quietly in the background, it forms an important part of how long-term impact is built — through consistency, follow-up, and practical support that responds to local needs.

Technical Support for Beekeeping and Sustainable Production

On 11 February, the Trocano Araretama Project carried out a technical visit along the Borba–Mapiá Road to the property of Mr. Tarcísio Bentes, where bee boxes installed in the area were inspected and maintained. During the visit, the structural condition of the boxes was assessed, alongside their general management and conservation status. Cleaning was carried out inside and outside the boxes, and corrective maintenance was undertaken together with the producer to help improve the sanitary, structural, and productive conditions of the hives. Activities like this reflect the project’s continued support for practical, community-based livelihood initiatives linked to sustainable land use and local environmental stewardship.

Building a Community-Led REDD+ Model in Brazil

What stands out from February is the continued strengthening of a community-led approach to REDD+ implementation.  Rather than treating conservation as a standalone objective, the Trocano Araretama Project continues to connect forest protection with:

  • education
  • institutional cooperation
  • local participation
  • practical community benefit

This integrated model is central to how Go Balance Brazil is developing REDD+ activities in Borba, Amazonas.

Looking Ahead

As the year progresses, February showed that long-term progress is built not only through major milestones, but through steady relationship-building, local engagement, and practical delivery.

With strong community support, expanding partnerships, and continued investment in education and opportunity, the Trocano Project REDD+ remains focused on creating durable value for both people and forests.
