On International Biodiversity Day, the Trocano Araretama REDD Project brought biodiversity and environmental education to life for students in Borba.
On May 26th, 2025, the Trocano Araretama REDD Project celebrated International Biodiversity Day with a school-based education session. The event took place at Dr. Adelino Costa Municipal School in Borba and focused on biodiversity awareness. Delivered through the Trocano Project REDD+, the session was engaging, informative, and designed for local students. The Municipal Department of Education (SEMED/BORBA) partnered with the project to support and organise the activity. Together, they helped students understand the importance of biodiversity and their role in protecting it.
The session linked global environmental themes to the local reality in Borba. It showed how the Trocano Project REDD protects biodiversity through forest conservation. It also demonstrated the project’s role in education and empowering local communities.
Promoting Biodiversity Awareness Through the Trocano Project REDD+
The session was led by Raidê Ferreira Carvalho, environmental consultant for the Trocano Araretama REDD Project, alongside videographer Mr. Asafe Castilho. Welcomed by school director Mr. Wilson do Coelho Santo, the team was given space in the school’s auditorium to deliver a lecture and interactive activity. The day was designed to deepen students’ understanding of biodiversity and environmental responsibility.
Raidê opened the session with warm thanks to the school community. He also thanked Mayor Raimundo Santana, the SEMED leadership — Mr. Cleudir Gelasio, Mrs. Marta Lucia, and Mrs. Marilene Motta – and all those supporting the Trocano Project REDD.

This educational session is delivered as part of the Go Balance REDD+ benefits brought to the Trocano Project in Borba Amazonas.
Local Forests, Global Lessons: Bringing Biodiversity Education to Life
The lecture, themed around “World Biodiversity Day,” began with a participatory discussion to explore what students already knew about biodiversity. From there, Raidê delivered a dynamic presentation enriched with illustrations and real-life examples drawn directly from the Amazon — the very ecosystem that the Trocano Project REDD+ is designed to protect.
Key topics included:
- What biodiversity is and why it matters globally and locally
- Brazil’s unique biomes and their ecological significance
- Threats to biodiversity, especially deforestation and habitat loss
- Everyday actions and sustainable practices that can help preserve the environment
- The real-world impact of the Trocano Araretama REDD Project in conserving biodiversity
The students were eager participants, asking insightful questions and making connections between their own lives and the broader environmental challenges discussed.

The Power of Play: Learning Through Interaction
To make the learning experience fun and memorable, the Trocano Project REDD team organised a playful activity. The team passed around balloons filled with biodiversity-related questions, and students eagerly burst them to answer what was inside. The Department of Education generously provided chocolate treats as rewards for correct answers.
The activity was a hit. It brought joy to the students and reinforced the key messages in an interactive and engaging way — demonstrating that environmental education can be both serious and fun.
Why This Matters: Trocano Project REDD+ and the Future of Forests
This initiative reflects a core value of the Trocano Araretama REDD Project. That forest protection and climate impact must go hand in hand with community engagement. By fostering a love for nature and an understanding of the importance of biodiversity, the project is helping to build a generation that will care for the forests they call home.
As Raidê noted in his closing remarks:
When students understand the richness of their environment, they become powerful protectors of it.
The Trocano Project REDD+: More Than Carbon
While the Trocano Project REDD+ is internationally recognised for delivering high-integrity carbon credits, its impact goes far beyond emissions reductions. By supporting biodiversity conservation, education, and sustainable development in the Amazon, the Trocano Araretama REDD Project is creating long-term value for people and planet alike.
We are proud to celebrate initiatives like this. Where community and conservation come together to inspire action, learning, and hope for the future.
